Fantasy, time-travel, and swoon-worthy moments mark the highly-anticipated romantic Korean drama Lovely Runner — with TvN dropping the deets to its plot, cast, and more over the past few weeks. Directed by Yoon Jong-ho and Kim Tae-yeop — the series is led by actors Byeon Woo-seok, Kim Hye-yoon, Song Geon-hee, and Lee Seung-hyub. Here’s what we know so far.
Romance is undoubtedly the lifeblood of Korean entertainment — with cult classics like Crash Landing On You, Business Proposal, and My Love From The Star boasting jaw-dropping viewership numbers. Most recently, popular titles that fall within this genre have explored the realm of fantasy. Take for instance the Song Kang starrer My Demon or Cha Eun Woo’s A Good Day to Be a Dog. Adding to the lineup is Lovely Runner — led by cast members Byeon Woo-seok and Kim Hye-yoon — whose plot sees a girl travelling back in time to save her favourite idol from impending tragedy. It’s penned by True Beauty and High Kick! 3 screenwriter Lee Si-Eun and is based on a web novel turned webtoon. Here’s all about it.
The plot of Lovely Runner
Im Sol watches her career in film direction go up in flames after an accident leaves her paralysed. However, music — particularly that of idol Ryu Sun-jae — offers some comfort. However, when the celebrity dies in an accident, she’s left heartbroken. That is, until fate sends her 15 years into the past before either accidents. Seeing this as another shot at life — she’s determined to change both their destinies.
Is Lovely Runner based on a webtoon?
The Kdrama Lovely Runner is based on the web novel Tomorrow’s Best by Kim Bbang. It was also serialised by illustrator Doong Doong as a webtoon.
Meet the cast of Lovely Runner
20th Century Girl and Strong Girl Nam-soon star Byeon Woo-seok will play Ryu Sun-jae — a good looking and charming singer-turned-actor idol who’s at the top of his game until an accident leads to his death.
Kim Hye-yoon — of the Sky Castle and Extraordinary You fame — will play the sweet and ambitious Im Sol who has to let go of her dream of being a film director when she injures her leg in an accident. Soompi quotes the drama’s production team as stating they couldn’t think of anyone else playing this role. “Kim Hye Yoon is creating Im Sol as a dynamic and charming character with her wide acting spectrum that spans over various genres. Please look forward to Im Sol’s charm, which will make viewers become fans of actress Kim Hye Yoon.”
Meanwhile, Joseon Attorney actor Song Geon-hee will play the flamboyant bassist Kim Tae-sung. Rapper, singer, and Nevertheless actor Lee Seung-hyub will step into the shoes of the easygoing Baek Inhyuk — guitarist and leader of the band Eclipse and Im Sol’s close friend.
Is there a release date for the Kdrama Lovely Runner?
Although earlier scheduled for the second half of 2023, Lovely Runner will be released on 8 April 2024 — episodes coming every Monday and Tuesday.
