Disney Plus will play host to an exciting prequel of the classic Korean show Chief Inspector that had viewers hooked from 1971-1989. With the release date set for April 2024, the new K-drama titled Chief Detective 1958 will tell the tale of a passionate detective who goes up against corruption with his colleagues — the cast being led by Lee Je-hoon, Lee Dong-hwi, and Choi Woo-sung. Here’s all about it.
Romance might be at the heart of the Hallyu wave but there’s no denying that some of the more popular series to come out of the Korean entertainment industry have involved some good ol’ crime-fighting and mystery solving. This ranges from classics like Signal and Suspicious Partner to more recent hits like Flex X Cop and Vigilante.
Adding to this lineup is a new show that fits into both categories — drawing inspiration from a timeless title to tell its tale. Directed by Kim Seong-hoon of the Confidential Assignment fame — Chief Detective 1958 boasts a stellar cast. The story is inspired by the wildly popular Chief Inspector, which boasted high viewership during its airtime — going back over a decade to follow skilled detectives on a mission to beat corruption power.

Meet the cast of Chief Detective 1958
The action is led by Taxi Driver and Signal actor Lee Je-hoon — who will essay the role of Park Young-han, a skilled detective who moves to Seoul from the countryside only to be frustrated with the corruption in the world. He puts together a team of colleagues to fight injustice.“Viewers can look forward to the passionate acting of Lee Je Hoon, who will portray the young Park Young Han in a new way,” the show’s production team was quoted saying by Soompi.
Reply 1988’s Lee Dong-hwi will play Kim Sang-sun — a wild card of a detective who’s called the ‘crazy dog’ of Jongnam Police Station. Meanwhile, My Roommate Is a Gumiho’s Choi Woo-sung will play the polite and incredibly strong detective Cho Kyun-hwan. Top Management actress Seo Eun-soo will play Lee Hye-joo — a beautiful and wise bookstore owner.
The series will also see a cross-over, with Soompi noting that Choi Bool Am — who played Park Young-han in the original — will make an appearance in the show. “By showing the elderly version of Park Young Han, who might seem ordinary on the outside, I wanted to say, ‘Okay, look carefully from now on. I’ll show you how extraordinary this seemingly ordinary person was,” director Kim Seong-hoon stated. “And to those who remember the original Chief Inspector, I wanted to say, ‘Everyone, the true chief inspector is back.’”
